Got 180 days to arrive on your Laos e-Visa? Here’s the catch (stay is still 30)
You open your Laos e-Visa approval email, spot “180 days” and start daydreaming about half a year of sticky rice and Mekong sunsets. Hold that thought (and the sticky rice). The 180 days is real, but it’s the time you have to show up, not the time you get to stay. Here’s the fun-sized explanation.
The news in one breath
Normally a Lao e-Visa approval letter gives you 60 days from approval to enter the country. Since around April 2026, approval emails have included a note from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs saying that, because of current travel conditions affecting some regions, the window is temporarily stretched to 180 days from approval. VisasNews reported on 17 September 2026 that fresh approvals were still getting the longer window, and the Ministry says it can change without warning.
The catch (it’s a small one)
- 🗓️ 180 days = your window to arrive.
- ⏳ 30 days = how long you can stay once you’re stamped in. Same as always.
- 🚪 One entry. Pop over to Thailand for a weekend and that e-Visa is done.
Think of it like a concert ticket that’s valid for any night in a six-month season. Super flexible! But the show still only lasts one night.
“But the website says 60 days!”
Yep, the FAQ on the official e-Visa portal still says 60 days. It hasn’t caught up with the temporary measure. So who wins? Your own approval letter. Whatever expiry date is printed there is the one for your trip.
And don’t borrow your travel buddy’s dates. Every approval shows its own window, and because this is temporary, a letter issued next month could be back to 60 days.
Count your clocks
- ⏱️ Approval day: the date your e-Visa was approved.
- 🧳 Last day to arrive: the expiry on your letter.
- 🌅 Last day to stay: 30 days after your entry stamp.
Arrive on day 170 of your window? You still get your full 30 days. Arrive on day 181? The letter has expired, so no entry on it.
Little things that save big headaches
- 🖨️ Print the approval letter. Phones die, and immigration wants to see it.
- 🛂 Use the same passport you applied with, and make sure it’s valid for more than 180 days from arrival (yes, another 180. Laos loves that number).
- 📲 Where the LDIF digital arrival form is used, fill it in online within three days before you arrive.
Falling in love with Laos and need more than 30 days?
Happens all the time. The bigger arrival window won’t stretch your stay, but an eligible tourist stay can usually be extended once you’re here. Our simple tourist visa extension guide walks you through it, and our Laos visas page covers the longer-stay options.

Speedy FAQ
So can I stay 180 days?
Nope. 180 days to arrive, 30 days to stay, one entry.
My letter says 60 days. Did I get the boring version?
Maybe the measure didn’t apply to your approval, or it has changed. Go by your letter’s date.
Will this last forever?
It’s officially temporary, so enjoy it while it’s here and always check your own dates.
