Need More Time in Laos? How Visa Extensions Really Work
You came for two weeks. Then someone mentioned the cool season in Luang Prabang, a coffee farm on the Bolaven, and a slow boat you somehow missed. Suddenly you need a Laos visa extension—not a panicked midnight bus to Nong Khai.
Laos Visa Center is here for that exact moment. Harmony Hotel, Vientiane. WhatsApp +856 20 9999 7573. Email contact@66visa.com. Home base: laosvisacenter.com · visas hub /laos-visas/.
The short version (stick this in your notes app)
- Tourist stay starts at about 30 days from entry
- You can usually extend twice
- Each extension can add up to about 30 days
- Aim for roughly 90 days total without leaving
- Assisted help from us: around USD 90
- Official fees are paid in kip at immigration (often ~20,000 LAK per day plus a small service fee)
- Overstaying is a terrible travel story—skip it
- Visa-exempt entries usually cannot be extended like tourist visas
Since 1 January 2025, the 30-day tourist baseline has been the planning default again. Travel advisories also stress that failing to extend inside the allowed window can bring heavy fines and removal. We would rather you message us early than write a sad hostel-group-chat epilogue.
What to bring (backpacker-proof list)
- Passport with your current Lao stamp
- A small photo (3×4 style is commonly requested—carry two)
- Kip for official fees (ATMs exist; do not arrive with only a foreign card and hope)
- Weekday availability (immigration is not a Sunday errand)
- A ride plan—Vientiane’s main counters are not always a cute walking-street hop
In Vientiane the process is the most practiced. Luang Prabang and Pakse can work too, sometimes slower. If you are deep in the south on a scooter dream, budget an extra day.
DIY or let us handle it?
DIY if you enjoy forms, have a free morning, and speak enough English/Lao to smile through the counter. Take a photo of every receipt.
Us if you are mid-itinerary, hate offices, or your stamp expires while you are still in Vang Vieng tubing country (please do not cut it that close). Message a photo of your stamp. We tell you how many days you can add and when to hand over the passport at Harmony Hotel.
Assisted tourist extension sits around USD 90—think of it as buying back a travel day and a chunk of stress.
A week-by-week feel for long stays
Days 1–10: Enter, learn the kip, screenshot the stamp, save our WhatsApp. Days 11–20: Decide if you truly want 60–90 days. Message us if yes. Days 21–28: Hand over passport for extension #1 if using assist. Days 35–55: Travel hard on the new dates; set a reminder for extension #2. Days 56–70: Complete second extension or plan a clean exit. Day 85+: Do not invent a third tourist extension—exit through a real checkpoint.
Extension vs “quick border run”
Border runs still live rent-free in SE Asia lore. Sometimes they make sense after you have used both extensions. Sometimes they are a long, hot way to get the same 30 days you could have added in town. Also important: officers decide re-entry. There is no laminated guarantee you can bounce forever between Nong Khai and Vientiane.
If you exit Laos on a single-entry tourist visa, that visa is done. Coming back means a new eVisa/VOA (if eligible)—budget time and money accordingly.
When you are actually moving here
If a café job, teaching gig, or NGO contract appeared, stop extending tourism and talk LA-B2. Different world: employer quota, invitations (~five working days), packages from USD 640 / USD 840, renewals ~USD 540. We will be honest if your plan is not ready yet. Mixing “I’m basically staff” with a tourist stamp is how chill trips become stressful ones.
Railway nomads and extension math
2026 railway crowds (hundreds of thousands of cross-border trips) mean more people discovering Laos is worth a second month. If you entered via Boten with 30 days and then fell for Luang Prabang’s pace, extensions are your friend. Just count from the stamp date, not from the day you first dreamed of the trip in Kunming.

Stories we hear (and how they end better)
“I’ll extend tomorrow, promise.” Tomorrow is a holiday. Message us today.
“The tuk-tuk driver said border runs are easier.” Sometimes true, often hotter, never a substitute for checking your remaining extension credits.
“I only need ten more days.” Immigration can do partial-day extensions; bring kip either way.
“My friend works here on tourist.” Your friend is rolling dice. You came to us instead—good call. Ask about LA-B2.
We keep the tone warm because travel should be fun. We keep the rules tight because Laos immigration is real life, not a Facebook comment thread.
Packing the extension day bag
Water, kip, passport, photo, phone power, and a book. Offices move at office speed. If you are using our assist, you can skip the queue tourism and meet us at Harmony Hotel instead—still bring patience for collection day. Either path beats an overstay fine story you tell for years.
